Classical Guitar

Classical Guitar instruction for children age 4 up through high school is being offered starting in September, 2015. The teaching approach will be similar to that of our violin instruction. We plan to include the guitar students in our activities, including the big annual Spring Concert. For more information, see Chris Mann’s bio page, and feel free to contact us.

Christopher has been my guitar teacher for over a year. I found him through a music school in my neighborhood, because I was looking for someone to teach me to play classical guitar.

I had started to play guitar elsewhere but was still very much a beginner when I signed up for private lessons with Chris. I most appreciated his patience and his empathy, and of course his knowledge and expertise. We had good rapport, not least because of his great sense of humor. It is obvious that he loves his instrument and enjoys teaching.

When I had trouble with something—for instance, my sense of rhythm wasn’t well-developed, and my fingers are too short to effortlessly play certain chords—he was conscientious and helpful in finding solutions, and often showed me several alternatives or gave me helpful advice. He always took care to explain or show things. I was never afraid, pressured, or felt as if I strained his patience. At the same time, he had high standards and expectations, and motivated me to get better. He values rigor and quality more highly than teaching you lots of songs.

I have greatly enjoyed studying with him and was sad to hear that he’s leaving Berlin. Wherever he goes, I am sure his students will appreciate his musical and pedagogical talents.
